Stephenie Meyer referenced The Merchant of Venice in this book. She always has literary influences to her stories, and she always references them in the books. Maybe not every one is familiar with The Merchant of Venice, but if you were, you would realize that the confrontation between the Cullens and the Volturi was not anti-climatic, it was expected. It was a battle of wits, which is also alluded to by the chess pieces on the cover. A battle of the mind, not the body.
